As a new class of Cobalt free cathode material, disordered rock-salt (DRX) structure cathode has recently gained attention due to its large capacity and its ability to accommodate various transition metal cations. Both cationic and anionic redox activity have been found in this class of materials. Fluorination of DRX cathodes has been proposed to improve the capacity retention and stability as part of anionic charge compensation. However, the amount of F- incorporated into the material is limited by the conventional solid-state reaction with LiF. In this study, we performed a direct fluorination reaction between Li-rich DRX cathode Li1.15Ni0.375Mn0.375Mo0.1O2 and F2 gas using a fluorination bed reactor. We found that the maximum F in the structure is about 8wt% limited by the formation of LiF impurity phase. The fluorinated cathode showed a comparable energy density and capacity retention with the pristine materials. TEM and solid-state NMR are used to understand the F local environment and the effect of different amount of F- anion on the structure.
