Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from paints have been a concern for decades, with a growing focus in recent years on the emissions from paints.  Numerous certifications have adopted emissions testing and there are hundreds of major paints which have been approved for credits with standards such as LEED, MPI X-Green, and GREENGUARD.  This presentation will focus on major challenges with emission testing (background, substrate effects, calibration, and formulation).  The relationship between total VOC in the wet paint and emission over time as the paint dries will also be discussed.  A better understanding of how different components in paint formulations, as well as the substrates to which the paints are applied, affect the paint emissions over time can enable paint manufacturers to provide solutions that better service the leading edge near zero VOC interior paint market.<br/>
