Au-based nanoparticles receive much attention for their application in catalysis, both in the liquid and gas phase. Where most studies have focused on Au on strongly interacting supports (reducible oxides) for oxidation catalysis, we have studied in detail Au catalysts for selective hydrogenation catalysis, and in this presentation we will discuss some selected examples. First we show how in some cases Au nanoparticles on weakly interacting supports such as SiO2 might provide much better performance for selective hydrogenation reactions that Au nanoparticles on reducible oxides such as TiO2, and discuss in detail the origin of this support influence (Figure 1 - left frame). Then we will turn to bimetallic catalysts, for which the catalytic performance critically depends on the atomic distribution of the two metals in the nanoparticles. We employed single-crystalline Au-based bimetallic nanorods to study the atomic redistribution in Au-Ag and Au-Pd nanoparticles at elevated temperatures, as a function of exposure to gases/reactants. Measuring such metal redistribution in situ is challenging, but we demonstrated how this can be done in a reliable manner, both at a single particle and an ensemble-averaged level, by combining in situ transmission electron spectroscopy with in situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure validated by ex situ measurements. As an example we show how the kinetics of atomic redistribution in Au−Ag nanoparticles depend on the metal composition and particle volume (Figure 1 - right frame), and present a simple theoretical model based on Fick’s first law that can correctly predict the experimentally observed behaviour. At the end of the presentation we will show how the atomic distribution influences the catalyst performance in Au-Ag and Au-Pd based hydrogenation catalysts.
