Five years ago Merrimack College initiated its Mobile Merrimack program, in which all students were provided with Apple iPads for use in the classroom. The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry has been at the forefront of the implementation of this program by integrating mobile technology into all parts of its curriculum. Recently, the junior/senior level Inorganic Chemistry course has been modified to allow for the integration of iPads into the regular workflow of the course. Students use their iPads to take and share notes, to visualize and interact with chemical structures, to complete assignments and exams, to create videos to demonstrate mastery, to document visual observations in lab, to present their laboratory results to the class, and to reflect on their learning experience. The successes and challenges of creating assignments and activities that take advantage of this mobile technology will be discussed.
