A genuinely new research direction was instigated in the instructor’s research group as the result of developing a Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) for a traditional one-semester inorganic course. This authentic integration of research and learning has professionally developed the investigator, the students in the research group, and the students in the course. Student learning gains include understanding project design, literature analysis, and oral and written communication. The investigator’s research program has been enhanced by the research questions explored by the student teams in the course. The work has included the synthesis of several novel platinum complexes that are fully characterized, as well as several others that are still under development. Additionally, the in-depth study of these complexes has uncovered potentially valuable chemically and biologically related reactivity. The latter studies are the result of a nascent collaboration that is hoped to generate another CURE opportunity. This presentation will discuss the positive learning outcomes and professional growth that are possible if we genuinely integrate teaching and research.<br/>
