Ants, like many other invertebrate species, are known to adhere to surfaces, giving them the ability to climb on structures like trees and other plant matter. The chemical or physical nature of this adhesion however has yet to be elucidated in many species, and adhesion may be associated with a chemical secretion released by the ant’s tarsal pads. Here, we report method development for the isolation of secretions from Camponotus pennsylvanicus and subsequent analysis by GC-MS to elucidate the chemical composition of the residual secretions left on walked surfaces to give insight into the bioadhesives being utilized by these invertebrates.
