The importance of the western honey bee, <i>Apis mellifera</i>, as a pollinator cannot be overstated.  As the effects of disease, parasites, chemical exposure, and the lack of quality forage on the health of the western honey bee become clearer, stakeholders are taking action to better monitor honey bee health.  However, tools that provide rapid and detailed feedback on the health of honey bee hives are still greatly needed so that appropriate actions can be taken to intervene.  We have developed new techniques to sample the chemical environment of the honey bee hive and analyze by GC/MS (gas chromatography mass spectrometry), and we are investigating the association of specific biomarkers with honey bee health.
