Crude oil is transported throughout the country, including the Great Lakes basin. Having a mitigation plan helps reduce the impact to the ecosystem if (when) a containment loss occurs.  A naturally occurring mechanisms for reducing the effects of an oil spill is digestion by the native microbes. Understanding the hydrocarbon microbial decomposition process requires analysis of both the sediment and water. The methods developed in this project supports the study of naturally occurring microbes and would enable crude oil fate predictions in freshwater ecosystems. Quantification of various crude oils and potential degradation derivatives from both water and sediment samples is presented along with evaluation of sampling methods to include purge and trap, headspace, and solvent extraction.
