Despite the increasing popularity of tattoos, little is understood about ink pigments and their photochemical properties. The reaction mechanisms that govern pigment decomposition and their corresponding products are unknown. We have begun to investigate the composition of various tattoo pigments in the solid state and simulated biological environments using a combination of transient and steady state spectroscopies paired with chromatography techniques. This contribution will detail the results of these investigations, focusing on the potential biological relevance of photocomposition products.
