The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), recently amended as the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety Act, requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to make affirmative findings on the potential risk to human health and the environment posed by new chemicals entering the market. For newer classes of chemicals such as nanomaterials, this evaluation can be challenging - new standards and test guidelines are currently being produced to accurately characterize these fascinating chemicals, making timely risk evaluations by EPA difficult. By participating in standards making and rule writing and working closely with industry, EPA continues to pave the way for thorough risk assessment and protective risk management strategies which allow for the growth of this new field and the protection of the environment.
