In this presentation, I will describe the critical role of organic coatings with respect to the stability of graphene oxide (GO) in water. To systematically evaluate the role of organic coatings, we controlled the shape/dimension of GO with varied organic surface coatings. (propylamine, tert-octylamine, 1-adamantylamine, 3-amino-1-propanol, and 3-amino-1-adamantanol) With identical organic structures, hydrophilicity of coating was controlled by the presence of hydroxyl groups. Also, we synthesized GO with different C/O ratio and size (GO-dot). Quantitatively, we specified the role of surface organic coating by comparing critical coagulation concentration (CCC) in varied salt concentration (NaCl, MgCl2, MgSO4, and CaCl2) with organic coated GO and pristine GO. Without coating (pristine GO), CCC was well matched with plate-plate DLVO energy interaction relationships. The effects of divalent cations were significant in case of highly oxidized GO (HGO) and quantum dot. We observed that hydrophilically organic coated GO (phi-GO) was more colloidally stable than hydrophobically organic coated GO (pho-GO) when structure of coating was identical. Interestingly, effects of type of divalent cations were negligible for pho-GO. In addition, the strong steric/hydrophilic organic coatings provide excellent colloidal stability for GO. We also explored the critical role of organic coatings on GO with respect to the deposition and re-entrainment to determining transport behaviors of GO using a quartz crystal microbalance-based technique (QCM-D). Organic coating on GO hindered deposition of GO, and promoted the re-entrainment of GO.
