The diffusion of carbon monoxide in icy grain mantles is thought to be an important mechanism by which key reactants are brought together to form complex organic molecules (COMs) in dense clouds; COMs have also been detected in proto-planetary disks. For this reason, the study of diffusion of molecules in interstellar ice analogs has spurred numerous experiments, several of which have focused on diffusion of molecules in non-polar environments. We have measured the ro-vibrational IR bands of CO and CO2 in CO:CO2 thin films under astrophysically relevant conditions. The innovative aspect of the experiments, conducted under UHV conditions and at low (6K-30K) temperature, is to use CO2 as a diagnostic tool to measure the diffusion of CO in CO ice (self-diffusion). We related shifs in CO2 bands in CO:CO2 mixtures at around 10K to the process of diffusion of CO. We investigated the dependence of this shift on ice thickness, mixing ration and temperature in the range relevant to space environments. Analysis and applications to astronomical objects will be presented.
