This lecture will describe the preparation of new polymer materials, inspired by Nature, for soft materials assembly and as mediators of fluid-fluid and fluid-solid interfaces. We have recently found that novel polymer zwitterions, including those composed of sulfonium sulfonate and phosphonium sulfonate groups, are adept at forming supracolloidal structures in fluidic environments. This allows for the realization of free-standing structures and printed fibers of droplets and colloids, which in turn opens yet unrealized opportunities in interfacial transport, micelle-mediated transport, and the formation of inter-droplet channels. These new polymer zwitterions complement more traditional phosphorylcholine and sulfobetaine structures and contribute to the construction of a diverse new toolbox of useful bio-inspired polymers.
