In this work, a sulfonic acid-functionalized magnetic separable solid acid catalyst (Fe3O4@SiO2-SO3H) was synthesized, characterized, and tested for fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) under diverse reaction conditions. The results showed that the prepared catalyst displayed high activity for fructose dehydration to HMF due to larger surface area, moderate acid density and homogeneous acid distribution, which could afford a highest HMF yield of 96.1 mol% with 100 mol% fructose conversion at 120 °C. More importantly, after the remove of Fe3O4@SiO2-SO3H from the reaction solution with an external magnet, the produced HMF could in-situ oxidized into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) in the presence of ZnFeRuO4 with a yield of 90.2%. The produce of DFF from fructose by above two consecutive steps avoids the tedious separation of the intermediate HMF, which saves time and energy. In addition, both Fe3O4@SiO2-SO3H and ZnFeRuO4 catalysts exhibited satisfied stability in the recycling experiments, which can be reused at least for five times with the HMF and DFF yield loss less than 5.3% and 3.3%, respectively. Finally, the plausible reaction mechanisms for fructose conversion to HMF or DFF over Fe3O4@SiO2-SO3H or/and ZnFeRuO4 catalysts were also proposed in this work.
