Siderophores are small, iron-chelating molecules secreted by some bacteria and used to transport iron across the cell membrane. Here we study the siderophores secreted from Rhodococcus ruber GIN-1 and DSM 43338 strains, grown in sea water media. Some siderophore structures from genus Rhodococcus have been reported, but no structures from R. ruber has been solved yet. The Rhodococcus ruber GIN-1 bacteria have also shown to have strong affinity for TiO2, suggesting that siderophores might be possible titanium-chelators as well. Work at early stages has been done to purify and identify siderophores’ chemical structure from R. ruber. Exploring a connection among this organism, its siderophore(s), iron, and other metals will inform our efforts to understand R. ruber’s interactions with metal oxides in the environment.
