From their roles as building blocks of nature to their use in disease-battling therapeutics and vaccines, carbohydrates (glycans) have had a profound impact on evolution, society, economy, and human health. Numerous applications of these essential biomolecules exist in many areas of science and technology. Although glycans are very desirable to the biological and medical communities, these molecules are challenging targets for chemists. Advances in glycosciences have certainly made common glycans much more accessible. However, the development of practical and general methods for chemical glycosylation and glycan synthesis represent demanding areas of research.<br/> <br/>At the core of this presentation is the development of new methods, strategies, and technologies for chemical glycosylation and glycan assembly. These tools will be discussed in light of recent results related to the H-bond-mediated aglycone delivery, catalytic regenerative glycosylation, and HPLC-assisted automated synthesis. The effectiveness of methods developed will be illustrated by the synthesis of microbial glycans and oligosaccharides from human milk.<br/>
