Natural gas is often sour, containing varying amounts of H2S and CO2. Gas sweetening processes that are routinely used rely on processes such as amine-based adsorption-desorption cycles, membrane separation, and cryogenic technologies which are energy-intensive and reject CO2. This work explores the mechanism and the nature of active sites for hydrogenation of CO2 as well as propane dehydrogenation in the presence of H2S on sulfur-tolerant catalyst, using steady state kinetics studies and electronic structure calculations. The objective of this work, set in this broader context, is to elucidate the nature of active sites, kinetics, and mechanism of the reactions of C3H6/CO2/H2/H2S on supported SnS2/SnS and MoS2. The specific combination of reactants is chosen to concurrently assess the ability of catalysts to catalyze the hydrogenation of CO2 (or the reverse water gas shift reaction, rWGS) with H2 potentially obtained from alkanes present in natural and shale gas, and explore the effect of H2S interacts with CO2 and with the active sites. To this end, we explore the role of H2S on the CO2 hydrogenation reaction as well as propane dehydrogenation using a combination of steady-state reaction kinetic experiments, isotope labeling studies and atomistic insights from density functional theory (DFT).
