Over the years, plasmonic materials have received extensive attention for their ability to convert solar into chemical energy. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of plasmonic metal nanostructures (PMNs) has been shown to enhance the photocatalytic performance of nearby semiconductors (SCs) in the composite, and hybrid plasmonic photocatalysts. In this presentation, we will focus on photocatalysis using core-shell copper-cuprous oxide (Cu-Cu2O) hybrid plasmonic nanostructures. The PMN can enhance the photocatalytic performance of SC via multiple energy and electron transfer pathways. These pathways include – (1) energy transfer through strong electromagnetic (EM) near field effect, (2) plasmon-induced resonance energy transfer (PIRET), (3) Landau damping (LD)-mediated hot-electron transfer, (4) direct interfacial electron transfer (also known as chemical interface damping, CID). While the fundamental understanding of LSPR mediated energy transfer pathways (strong near field effect and PIRET) and LD-mediated hot-electron transfer pathway are well established in the field, the design rules for the CID pathway remain unknown. In this talk, we will show that the CID pathway in hybrid plasmonic nanostructure can be controlled by controlling the geometry of PMN. We will also demonstrate that the CID-induced electrons in core-shell Cu-Cu2O nanostructure can successfully catalyze photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) dye molecules as well as carbon-carbon coupling reaction between aryl halide and phenylacetylene. Our results show that Cu2O shell thickness is the critical design parameter in determining the photocatalytic activity of CID-induced electrons.
