Recent use of Chemical Warfare Agents (CWAs) and toxic gases such as Chlorine against civilian and military personnel have shown the need for protection against a wide variety of chemicals, both for individuals, collective protection, and site decontamination or mitigation. While existing carbon-based filtration systems have proven to be effective, scientists continue to search for novel materials that might improve the effectiveness of filters, improve suit protection, or enhance material lifetime through self decontamination. Here we present recent progress on studies of key emerging materials such as Zr-based Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) when exposed to gas phase chemical agents such as Sarin (GB) and sulfur mustard (HD). These experiments have been performed at ambient pressure in the presence and absence of atmospheric gases and contaminants (e.g. H2O, O2, SO2) using a variable temperature environmental diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) instrumentation specifically designed to safely work with chemical agents. Results indicate that there can be profound effects of atmospheric gases on agent adsorption and reaction on the MOFs.
