Early efforts towards CWA decontamination have largely focused on solution-based methods such as bleach, or the use of novel inorganic nanomaterials that while promising, are often constrained by the prerequisite that to achieve rapid detoxification the reaction is required to proceed in solution or buffer. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), while most commonly stabilized in an aqueous solution, has the distinction that it can also be immobilized onto solid supports. H2O2 has been demonstrated to be an effective means for HD decontamination in solution, with the added benefits of being a ‘green’ catalyst whose only by-product is water and reported HD half-lives of &lt; 1min To date, the use of H2O2 when immobilized onto a solid support for HD decontamination has not been reported. Herein we report the use of an all solid phase oxidizing agent against sulfur mustard and two of its simulants 2-CEES and 2-CEPS. Polymer complexes of poly(N-vinylpryrrolidone) (PVP) with hydrogen peroxide were utilized as solid forms of H2O2. Opposed to traditional peroxide solutions, this all solid phase complex is capable of detoxifying HD and its simulant upon contact without a buffer or cosolvent, and is found to undergo asymmetric oxidation of the sulfide producing mainly the benign sulfoxide, thus avoiding the noxious sulfone product. Moreover, mixing the powder with a peroxide activator such as a molybdate salt found to enhance the rate of oxidation. The powder mixture was further electrospun into fibrous mat and its effectiveness as a self-decontaminating garment was assessed. Finally, we show that this complex react with analogues of fentanyl, and thus can serve as an effective tool against the burgeoning opioid epidemic.
