Polymer waste is both a threat to the environment and economy, and an untapped resource of energy-rich hydrocarbons. If the large macromolecules that make polymers could be chemically transformed or “upcycled” into value-added chemicals, rather than disposed of as waste or downcycled into lower grade plastics, the energy and value put into the polymers could be reclaimed and turned into new materials. The focus of this talk will be on the question: how can we design the metal/oxide interface of supported noble metal catalysts to modify their activity and selectivity? Specifically, we utilize the strength of interaction between faceted perovskite oxide supports and noble metal catalysts to selectively hydrogenolyze polyethylene into high-quality liquids (HQLs). Hydrothermal synthesis of SrTiO3 may produce nanocuboids that are controllably terminated with TiO2-rich {100} facets. Supported Pt nanoparticles, which have a close lattice match to SrTiO3, are stabilized on the SrTiO3 facets. The well-dispersed Pt nanoparticles convert waste polyethylene into relatively uniform fragments though interactions of the polymer macromolecules with the catalyst and support surfaces.
