Transition metal phosphides have shown as very efficient catalysts for hydrotreating processes. Considering the results obtained in a previous research1 with monometallic transition metals, being the most active for hydrotreating of methyl laurate (ML) the MoP/SiO2 catalysts, the aim of this work is to analyze the influence of the addition of cobalt or iron, in order to tune the selectivity and to check the influence of the bimetallic character (MoCoP / MoFeP) on to the conversion and stability for the deoxygenation of ML to hydrocarbons. The catalysts were prepared by successive wet impregnations of silica to obtain the following silica-supported phosphides. The obtained dihydrogen phosphites (M(HPO3H)) were dried in an oven at 60°C overnight. Then, temperature programmed reduction with pure hydrogen to phosphide and finally were cooled under a N2 flow to room temperature and then passivated using a mixture O2/N2. Hydrotreating of ML was operated in a trickled-bed reactor in parallel flow and at high pressure. The reaction conditions were: 300°C, 2.0 MPa, liquid flow 0.3 mL min-1 and H2/liquid molar ratio 300. The dispersion of the active phase detected by CO chemisorption exhibits MoP with the highest dispersion, while for bimetallic catalysts MoCoP/SiO2 and MoFeP/SiO2 dispersion is lower but clearly higher than those values found for the monometallic CoP/SiO2 and FeP/SiO2 catalysts. Catalytic activity results show similar conversions for MoP/SiO2 and MoCoP/SiO2 catalysts, while the MoFeP/SiO2 and CoP/SiO2 catalysts exhibited intermediate conversion values. Finally, the monometallic FeP/SiO2 showed, by far, the lowest conversion level. The main detected products are hydrocarbons. The selectivity to C11+C12 hydrocarbons exhibits the following trend: MoP/SiO2 &gt; CoP/SiO2 &gt; MoCoP/SiO2 &gt; MoFeP/SiO2 &gt; FeP/SiO2. Although a correlation between catalytic activity and active phase dispersion has been found, the nature of the metal phosphide has a tremendous effect in the reaction behavior and in the HDO pathway. Activity results point to a kind of interaction that yield to an enhancement of the catalytic activity of CoMoP/SiO2 catalyst respect to the contribution of only a sum of contribution of the activity of MoP and CoP present in the catalyst.
