Understanding the evolution of both surface species and the catalyst during each phase of the catalysis process (i.e. reaction, deactivation, and regeneration) plays a critical role in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts for biomass utilization. In-situ characterization provides opportunities to investigate these changes in real time under realistic conditions. While individual characterization technique can provide valuable information on specific aspect of catalyst deactivation, for example, combined information obtained from multiple techniques is necessary to understand the whole picture. Recently, we applied both ex-situ and in-situ characterization to better understand different biomass-related catalytic processes including catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass over metal carbide catalysts and biomass-derived methanol-to-high-octane gasoline over metal-modified zeolites. For example, we applied multiple in-situ techniques including UV-vis spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the evolution of surface carbon species during the regeneration of metal-modified zeolite catalysts comprehensively. The knowledge obtained from different characterization studies allows us to design and practice optimal deactivation-mitigation and regeneration processes.
