Upgrading hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) biocrude to fuels via traditional hydrotreating presents several challenges. Elevated metals loadings create unique upgrading challenges for HTL biocrude. Elevated iron levels in HTL biocrude from algae (~1000 ppm) and sewage sludge (50-250ppm) lead to deposition of iron in catalyst beds upon hydroprocessing.  The presence of a catalyst under reducing conditions (H<sub>2</sub>) facilitates the decomposition of the porphyrin structure through HDM, which leads to the deposition of Fe on the catalyst surface.  Elevated concentrations of Si, P, Na, Mg, K, Ca, and Al can lead to excessive deposition within reactor beds, clogging reactors and resulting in premature shutdown and catalyst replacement. This presentation will explore non-traditional hydrotreaters to upgrade HTL biocrudes.<br/>
