Polyolefins dominate the plastic world. The control over their primary structure, comonomer distribution, tacticity, molar mass, architecture, and functionality using olefins as starting materials has advanced in unimaginable ways over the past half century. This has largely been due to incredible progress in catalysis through careful design and control of organometallic complex structure. However, there are classes of polyolefins that are challenging to prepare in this traditional manner. As a result, other synthesis strategies have emerged that allow for the preparation of unique structures that are not possible through direct olefin polymerization approaches. These new structures afford tremendous opportunity to uncover the potential of polyolefins for new and technologically important applications. We have focused on how the combination of ring-opening metathesis polymerization followed by hydrogenation to remove backbone unsaturation can be used to generate stereoregular, regioregular, and highly functional polyolefins that cannot be prepared by current olefin polymerization methods. In this way, we can study materials properties and identify important structure property relationships that can help drive discovery and fundamental understanding in this ubiquitous and important class of macromolecules. In this talk, I will emphasis regioregular and telechelic polyolefins through monomer and chain transfer agent design. The importance of discrete ruthenium-based metathesis catalysis to accomplish this will be emphasized.
