Forensic biochemistry is an interdisciplinary course combining two relevant topics (biochemistry and forensic science) developed at our university to stimulate student motivation. This interdisciplinary course builds on the interest of popular television shows such as CSI and connects essential concepts in biochemistry with criminal justice studies to kindle student interest using the forensic science theme. Students learn the fundamental principles used to solve crime scenarios using ideas and techniques based on multiple disciplines improving their critical thinking and problem solving skills. The collaboration of students of different academic focus leads to the debunking of myths surrounding both police and forensic scientists, while developing an awareness of how law enforcement and scientists work together in reality. In an effort to improve student learning outcomes and retention in advanced forensic science curricula, we describe a research-based curriculum in forensic biochemistry developed at the university. In the first seven weeks, students learn the fundamentals of amino acids, proteins, enzymes and finally DNA typing (presumptive tests, DNA extraction and quantitation, short tandem repeat polymerase chain reaction and capillary electrophoresis). Students then identify a research problem/hypothesis, find suitable techniques by literature survey, plan and collect samples, determine variables, analyze data and present their results as a formal report as well as an oral presentation. Based on the end of semester evaluations by students, we found that most students showed a renewed interest in research in science in general and specifically in forensic science as an outcome of the exercise. There was an overwhelming positive feedback from the students based on a five point Likert scale survey and informal comments for a research based curriculum. Additionally, pre- versus post survey data indicated that students gained confidence in organizing and presenting their data as well as a deeper understanding of forensic biochemistry and careers in forensic science.
