The heating and evaporation of fuels are factors that affect combustion in a diesel engine.  In this work, the heat capacities of jet fuel and model mixture systems were determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).  Methods were designed to determine the energy associated with evaporating the complex fuel mixture and the simple model mixtures under controlled temperature conditions using a thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA)/DSC system.  Model mixture systems for the fuel contained butylbenzene, butylcylohexane, dodecane, and isocetane.  The mixture compositions were selected based on matching physical (e.g. density) and combustion properties of the mixtures with those of the fuel.  The presentation will discuss the development of the experimental methods for quantifying evaporation behavior and will report on which mixtures had thermal properties that best matched those of military jet fuel.<br/>
