The sensitivity of ignition delay time to equivalence ratio (Φ-sensitivity) is a useful fuel property that can be combined with advanced engine operating strategies, such as fuel stratification, to achieve high-efficiencies and low-emissions over a wide range of engine loads. Φ-sensitivity also allows greater control over combustion phasing during engine operation. Φ-sensitivity is a chemical phenomenon that arises due to intermediate temperature reactions (850-1000 K) involving a handful of oxygenated intermediates: OH, HO2, CH2O and H2O2. We use chemical kinetic modeling to determine whether there are general correlations between these species concentrations during fuel oxidation and Φ-sensitivity. A diverse range of fuels are simulated, which represent the classes of hydrocarbons present in gasoline (paraffins, olefins and aromatics) and potential biofuels (oxygenates). Such correlations can be used to predict Φ-sensitivity at a given temperature and pressure using only measurements of the relevant species, obviating the need for “brute-force” measurements of Φ-sensitivity. Additionally, the ability to extend this correlation to species measurements made under highly-diluted fuel concentrations is explored. The existence of such a correlation would enable rapid characterization of Φ-sensitivity for a given fuel using small material quantities.
