Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass followed by hydroprocessing can readily produce bio-blendstocks rich in naphthenic (cycloalkanes and alkyl- cycloalkanes) hydrocarbons. The bio-derived naphthenic fuel could be used to improve certain fuel properties of petroleum-based diesel fuels and consequently their combustion performance in Mixing Controlled Compression Ignition (MCCI) engines. For instance, the high concentration of cycloalkanes in the bio-blendstock could improve cold weather behavior and reduce the sooting propensity of petroleum diesel fuels. Therefore, the goal of this study is to better understand how the composition of the bio-blendstock impacts diesel fuel properties. Three bio-blendstocks boiling within diesel range with oxygen contents &lt;1%, 3%, and 6% were characterized to determine their chemical composition and the following fuel properties: energy content, density, smoke point, cetane number, cold weather behavior (pourpoint, cloudpoint), and boiling point curve. A surrogate fuel study was then performed based on the chemical composition of the three bio-blendstocks to investigate and understand the  fuel property-molecular structure relationships for the naphthenic bio-blendstocks and the selected fuel properties. The surrogate fuel consisted of major molecules found in naphthenic bio-blendstocks representing these classes of compounds (naphthenes, paraffins, monoaromatics, polyaromatics, aromatic oxygenates, and aliphatic oxygenates). The presentation will discuss the results from these studies and highlight molecular structure and fuel property relationships for naphthenic bio-blendstocks.
