Currently, we are experiencing a petroleum crisis as we continue to deplete our natural oil reservoirs while simultaneously fueling global warming as we emit more greenhouse gasses, so there has been a huge push for research into alternative fuel sources and to the production of a carbon neutral Biodiesel. Biodiesel that is synthesized by transesterification utilizing acid or base catalysts is already accepted on an industrial scale due to its high conversion and reaction rates. However, this method of biodiesel production has high processing costs and environmental problems, so research has shifted towards enzymatic transesterification. The current cost of the enzyme and the biofuel refinement has prevented enzymatic transesterification from reaching an industrial level. The current study will analyze the impact of different contaminants on the biofuel and the efficiency of various refinement methods by running characterization tests on the fuel. The characterization tests ran on the biofuel were flash point, viscosity, combustion, NMR, and density.
