Raman Spectroscopy is a useful and highly specific technique to identify and quantify analytes based on their unique vibrational and polarization properties. Due to the inherently weak signal typically generated by Raman scattering compared to Rayleigh scattering, the surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method is used to enhance the signal to noise ratio and increase the precision of the Raman spectroscopy technique. The SERS method uses metal nanoparticles, typically silver or gold, that interact with the analyte to increase the signal of the analyte. This is done by exploiting the localized plasmon resonance of the nanoparticle. An enhanced electromagnetic field will be formed around a nanostructure with a roughened surface, and because the intensity of Raman scattering depends on the square of the strength of the electromagnetic field, the intensity will be enhanced when the analyte is close to the surface of the nanostructure. Utilizing electromagnetic interactions between the analyte and the nanoparticle, as well as chemically binding the analyte to the nanoparticle can result in an increase in signal. An evaluation of a Progeny X2 Handheld Raman Analyzer to detect nerve agent simulants such as dimethyl chorophosphate (DMCP) and dimethymethyphosphonate (DMMP) revealed that it is capable of detection and analysis. Relevant peaks were evaluated at various concentrations, and the LOD and LOQ for each peak was determined. Experimental details and analysis will be presented.
