We are interested in determining what factors influence the stabilization of different phases in lanthanide chalcogenides from LnX, Ln2X3, Ln3X4 and LnX2 for Ln = lanthanide, and X = S, Se, Te. The oxidation state plays an important role, but the precursor for the lanthanide and the nature of the chalcogen reagent are also important. In this work, we focus on the redox active metals, Eu and Sm, and look at phase control using trimethyl-silyl-sulfide as the chalcogen source. We have been able to demonstrate phase control by careful modification of each reagent.
