Development of new hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for water splitting with robust stability and low overpotential is still remaining as one of the biggest challenges for energy conversion. Cobalt dichalcogenides CoX2 (X= S, Se, Te) in both the marcasite and pyrite phases have shown particularly high hydrogen evolution reaction activities. Although, recently different activating strategies, such as defects and composition engineering, have led to remarkable activity gains. In this work, we report the first successful colloidal synthesis of Cr-doped marcasite CoSe2 nanoclusters. In a typical procedure, the mixture of precursors including CoCl2, Cr(acac)3, and Se were added to 10 g octadecylamine (ODA; as the capping agent) and the solution was heated to 330 oC and held at this temperature for 60 minutes under nitrogen atmosphere. The synthesized nanoparticles have been characterized by XRD, TEM, HAADF-STEM, and EDS-STEM. The EDS-STEM elemental mapping, evidence the presence of chromium that uniformly doped over the marcasite structure and led to the formation of Co0.9Cr0.1Se2 nanoclusters. This work comes up with an easy and low-cost strategy in designing and improving novel electrocatalysts.
