A two-step intercalation and surface modification procedure was implemented to produce heterofunctional α-ZrP and investigate the relationship between the interlayer and surface in regard to stability and reactivity. Samples intercalated with varying loads of monovalent and divalent ions were prepared by ion-exchange. Surface modification was then achieved by reaction with 1,2-epoxyoctadecane and the intercalated and modified samples were characterized using methods including TGA, XRF, and FTIR.  Uptake and thermal stability of the epoxide were used to establish the impact of the interlayer contents on the reactivity and stability of the attached surface groups. Loading level and interlayer reactivity were studied in depth.
