The use of core-shell oxide electrodes, where a more insulating oxide is used to form the shell, has proven an effective strategy for improving the solar conversion efficiency of Dye-sensitizedphotoelectrochemical cells (DSPECs). Atomic layer deposition (ALD) can form core-shell surfaces with control of the layer thickness on the atomic scale, but at substantial capital and operational cost. An alternative coating approach is to use liquid phase deposition of the shell coating from reactive oxide precursors in solution. For example, the use of TiCl4(aq) has been used as an important surface treatment for TiO2photoanodes used in dye-sensitized solar cells. Using this technique for establishing SnO2@TiO2surfaces results in irreversible damage to the SnO2coating which compromises the performance advantage of introducing the coating layer. Therefore liquid phase deposition chemistries, including the use of aqueous ammonium hexafluorotitanate or titanium(IV) isopropoxide in ethanol/water mixtures, are being explored as suitable methods for creating TiO2shell coatings on SnO2and Sn3O4mesoporous surfaces. This poster will present the latest progress in these efforts.
