We are interested in layered materials for their novel properties that result from structural anisotropy. Recently, excitement has been generated by the ability to prepare atomically thin nanosheets, termed “two-dimensional” (2D) materials. These are of interest because of properties that differentiate them from the bulk, including improved mechanical flexibility. We have prepared a series of single-source precursors composed of a trivalent lanthanide and the diseleno-diphenylphospinate ligand, [Ln(Se2PPh2)3(CH3CN)x] where Ln=La-Lu (except Pm) and x=1 or 2, and found that most decompose to form pure, thin nanosheets of the LnSe2-x phase- an understudied class of rare-earth chalcogenides. Lanthanide dichalcogenides form 2D layered nanomaterials that are the rare-earth analogs of transition metal dichalcogenides.
