Europium selenide belongs to a class of model intrinsic magnetic semiconductors, exhibiting coupled magnetic and semiconducting properties. We have previously demonstrated solution-phase preparation of EuS nanocrystals by thermolyzing single-source precursors of dithiocarbamates, Eu(S2CNR2)L (R = alkyl, L = Bpy or Phen). Here, we prepared colloidal EuSe nanocrystals by similar solution-phase thermolysis with diselenophosphinates, Eu(Se2PPh2)MeCN, and demonstrated size-control of the nanocrystals. To gain insights into the electronic structure at the bandgap of the EuS and EuSe nanocrystals, we employed magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). In doing so, we reveal the extent of the conduction band splitting occurring near and below the magnetic ordering temperatures of the nanocrystals. Additionally, with field-dependent measurements, we observe the occurrence of a ferri- to ferromagnetic ordering in the EuSe nanocrystals.
