Ternary metal oxide semiconductors based on first-row transition metals have many potential applications in optoelectronics and electrochemistry (batteries, supercapacitors, photocatalysts for water splitting, etc.) due to their low cost, small bandgaps, and electrochemical stability. Synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals of ternary transition metal oxides would enable (i) decreased materials processing costs, (ii) the use of solution-phase spectroscopic techniques to study the chemical nature of the nanoscale interface between the oxide semiconductor and the liquid phase, and (iii) potential access to crystal phases that are not thermodynamically stable as bulk materials. Ternary oxide nanocrystals are difficult to synthesize as phase-pure materials due to the tendency to form mixtures containing both binary and ternary oxide phases that are difficult to separate. This talk presents new insights into the synthesis of ternary metal oxide nanocrystals using mixed-valent, homoleptic clusters of the general formula FeIII2MIIO(RCO2)6(L)3 (L=THF or H2O) as model single-source precursors for a class of ternary metal oxides known as metal ferrites, which have the general formula MIIFeIII2O4 (M=Co, Ni, Cu, Zn). The role of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents (R) was found to be crucial for maintaining the above mixed-valent heterometallic assemblies. The effect of reaction time, temperature and precursor concentration on the stoichiometry, crystal phase, and morphology of the resulting nanoparticles will be presented.
