In recent years, there is a renewed interest in new optical and electronic metal halide materials primarily stemming from the development of hybrid lead halide perovskites. In this work, we focus on a group of all-inorganic copper halides A2CuX3 (A=Rb+, K+; X= Cl-, Br-), which are relatively nontoxic and more stable as compared to hybrid lead halides. We have prepared bulk powder and single crystals of target materials using high temperature and solution techniques. Our detailed optical characterization suggest that these materials are ultrabright light emitters with measured photoluminescence quantum yields up to 100% (unity). The bright emission in this family has been attributed to self-trapped excitons localized on Cu-X anionic substructure based on exhaustive photoluminescence studies supported by the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Our work strongly suggests that copper halides should be considered as nontoxic alternatives to lead halides for luminescence-related applications.
