Metalattices are three-dimensional interconnected nanostructures with periodicity ranging from 1 nm to 100 nm. This material system uses nanoscale structural order to interact with the characteristic length scales of physical properties, such as magnetic exchange lengths and electron mean free paths. This leads to structure property relationships which can offer transformative advances for fundamental new physics. For example, palladium metalattices show bulk-like ferromagnetism in a normally nonferromagnetic material. Compared to its bulk counterpart, palladium metalattices show induced ferromagnetism originating from a peak in the density of states near the Fermi level which satisfies the Stoner criterion.<br/>The palladium metalattice is synthesized by the deposition of palladium into the tortuous voids of a stacked silica nanosphere template. However, the synthesis has been met with substantial challenges stemming from the poor mass transport of precursor molecules into the voids of the template. A deposition method which has overcome these challenges is confined supercritical fluid deposition (CSFD). CSFD involves the dissolution of an inorganic metal precursor in high pressure supercritical carbon dioxide and its transport into the template voids while the template is spatially confined. The precursor is then reduced to fill the voids with the deposited metal to build the metalattice structure. Before this study, palladium was not successfully deposited fully into nanosized template voids to generate an interconnected nanostructure.<br/>Through understanding the parameters involved with the deposition thermodynamics and kinetics, palladium metalattices have been synthesized by infiltrating palladium into stacked silica nanosphere templates with silica nanosphere diameters of 14 nm, 30 nm, and 60 nm as confirmed by electron microscopy. Magnetic measurements using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry have confirmed ferromagnetism in the palladium metalattices which indicates that the metalattice structure induces ferromagnetism in normally nonferromagnetic metals.
