Characterization of soluble hydrocarbon materials from petroleum, shale and coal can easily be fingerprinted using the saturates, aromatics, resins-Asphaltene Determinator (SAR-AD<sup>TM</sup>) separation. This unique automated HPLC separation produces five different maltenes fraction—based upon chromatography—combined with 3 distinct asphaltene subfractions—based upon solubility. By using model PAH compounds, substituted PAH compounds, porphryins and other model compounds, the types of molecules which elute in the various maltenes fractions can be understood in terms of their aromaticity, number of fused rings, sterically hindering pendant groups and heteroatom functional groups. For the first maltene fraction, saturated compounds are apparent, in the second fraction 1 ring aromatics dominate, for the third fraction 2-3 ring aromatics are prevalent, in the fourth fraction 4+ ring aromatics are present and for the fifth fraction aromatic compounds containing oxygen or nitrogen functional groups are eluted. Certain ethers and cyclic sulfur compounds can also report to the third and fourth fractions. Additional aromatic PAH compounds—bridged with aliphatic groups and aryl carbon-carbon bonds—were studied to determine if these geometries had a significant impact on which fraction these compounds will report. Different types of compounds were surveyed to find suitable model compounds for the asphaltene subfractions. A few model compounds containing nitrogen, ketones and phenols were shown to elute in the toluene-soluble asphaltenes fraction. This data is helpful to interpret differences between select petroleum, coal and shale oil materials, processing conditions, as well as oxidation of a paving grade asphalt under laboratory aging and field aging conditions.<br/>
