This talk will provide an overview of the various types of computation, software, databases, training opportunities, and “support groups” of chemical educators currently using computational chemistry in their undergraduate courses. Computational techniques are widely used to understand chemical phenomena and in the design of new drugs and materials. Because of its established importance in chemical enterprise, educators have incorporated computational exercises into their curricula for over 25 years, producing a wealth of activities and resources. However, it is still a challenging task to implement this new essential technique into existing undergraduate programs. In addition to the tools mentioned above, examples of exercises from the five chemical sub-disciplines will be presented. Finally, guiding principles for computational exercises will be proposed as a starting point for discussion.
