The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific society with members in industry, academia, and government. A not-for-profit organization chartered by Congress, ACS works with the US government to promote public policies that help the chemistry enterprise and its practitioners serve the nation. ACS is committed to addressing national and global challenges such as economic opportunity, energy and water availability, and environmental sustainability through the appropriate application of chemical science and engineering. ACS has over 20 public policy statements that aim to foster innovation, strengthen science education, communicate science to the public, and promote science and sustainability in public policy. The talk will explain the process of how public policy statements are developed, the process used to finalize and approve them, and how the ACS uses them to work with government officials. Examples of how the policy statements have been used will be presented and a brief overview of the current review cycle for the business climate statement.
