Photopolymerization has been researched and developed for many years as a means for producing an array of high value materials that provide infinite working time and cure on demand. A wide range of industries and markets rely on photopolymerized materials which are used in coatings, adhesives, dental materials, tissue engineering, photolithography, microfluidics and 3D printing. Shrinkage and the associated stress that accompanies the polymerization of these materials such as (meth)acrylates has been a 50+ year old problem across each of these areas. The multi-center collaborative research efforts between 3M, the University of Colorado and the University of Michigan specifically focused on a truly disruptive solution for dental composites that will also undoubtedly be applied to an array of future non-dental applications in the aforementioned areas. This presentation and symposium will focus on the technical and business motivation, the decade-long chronological journey from an elegant technology concept (addition fragmentation monomers (AFM’s)) to a successful product commercialization and the numerous individual and joint technical contributions. In addition, several retrospective insights associated with the complexity of addressing both technical and non-technical challenges and successes within an industrial and academic collaboration will be discussed.
