Over the past few decades, the chemistry of porphyrins and phthalocyanines has greatly expanded with the development of their isomers and analogs.   In many cases, the analogs of these macrocycles can be generated via single atom substitution, as seen in the core modified porphyrinoids.  In this talk, a new “macrocycle” precursor with an open meso position will be discussed.  Derived from a pyrazole-modified isoindoline, this hemiporphyrazine variant replaces a meso nitrogen with a hydrogen bond linkage.  This compound can be generated via transition metal templating reactions or by direct synthesis of the free base.  In addition to structural characterization, spectroscopy and electronic structure, including aromaticity, will be discussed.
