Homogeneous complexes from group VI metals, particularly molybdenum, have proven effective towards activation of the strong bonds of dinitrogen and carbon monoxide relevant to industrial processes for ammonia and hydrocarbon syntheses.  Inspired by these industrial processes, we are synthesizing homogeneous, bimetallic group VI metal clusters contained within flexible, redox-active bis(pyridinediimine) (PDI<sub>2</sub>) macrocyclic ligands, where the multiple metals within the macrocyclic pocket, in conjunction with the redox-active PDI moieties, can serve to regulate multi-electron reactions. Efforts and challenges towards synthesizing these group VI macrocyclic complexes will be summarized, along with elucidation of the geometric and electronic structures of the resulting metal complexes within the context of their potential for small molecule activation and catalysis.
