Oxidative aliphatic C-C bond cleavage catalyzed by Cu(II) salts has become a topic of interest in synthetic chemistry. However, there is a general lack of research of the mechanistic pathways of these reactions. In previous work, our group discovered that when the Cu(II) chlorodiketonate complex [(6-Ph2TPA)Cu(PhC(O)CClC(O)Ph)]ClO4 was exposed to catalytic amounts of chloride ion under an oxygen atmosphere, oxidative cleavage would occur rapidly. DFT calculations of this reaction predicted that when chloride is present it coordinates to the Cu(II) center and lowers the energy barriers for O2 activation and O-O bond cleavage. In this presentation, we report further studies of the effect of chloride ion, along with reactions of related systems involving substituted chlorodiketonate complexes and/or alternative anions.
