New symmetric [(Cl3)Pt(dpop')M(dpop')Pt(Cl3]; M = Ru(II) or Os(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. Due to the extremely limited solubility range of the neutral complexes, NMR, absorption and electrochemical data was obtained and results are reported in DMF. NMR spectra display 1H resonances consistent with symmetric coordination, and 2-D NMR data were used for resonance assignments. Cyclic voltammetry data show four redox couples at negative potentials associated with dpop’ (0/-1) and dpop’ (-1/-2) ligand reductions. Electronic absorption spectra display intense M → dpop’(π*) MLCT transitions in the visible spectrum and dpop’ → dpop’* intraligand transitions in the near UV. Both tri-metallic complexes are soluble in DMSO, and undergo pseudo first order decomposition, yielding the respective [(dpop’)M(dpop’)]+2 ions. Rate constants were determined from absorption data, and product identification was elucidated by NMR data.
