2,2’-Bipyridine N,N’-dioxide has the ability to act as a bidentate chelating ligand with a potential to coordinate via the N-oxide oxygen donor atom in a bridging mode. When reacting with copper(II) chloride, twelve products with the general formula of Cua(bipyO2)bCl2a(solv)c (a = 1 – 3, b = 1 – 8, solv = H2O or methanol) depending on reaction conditions (stoichiometry, solvent, and temperature) have been isolated. The composition of polycrystalline products was based on results of elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopic measurements. ESR measurements indicate polynuclear character of samples with higher stoichiometric coefficient for copper in the formula due to presence of Cu(II) – Cu(II) interactions. In several cases, single crystals were grown from polycrystalline products allowing for the study of their molecular and crystal structure by X-ray crystallography. Crystallographic and spectroscopic studies of isolated Cu(II) complexes will be presented.
