Single molecule magnets have great potential in the field of computing because of their proposed applications in quantum computing and memory devices. Some transition metal complexes containing metallic clusters exhibit properties of single molecule magnets. Bridging ligands are used to form metallic clusters. 3-Hydroxyimidazole 1-oxide, which has potential to be a bridging ligand, was coordinated with copper(II) chloride, bromide, nitrate, acetate, triflate, perchlorate, and sulfate at stoichiometries of 1:1 and 2:1 using water as a solvent. Crystallographic studies showed the compositions of these polymeric complexes as {Cu2(µ4-imzO2)(µ-imzO2)2(H2O)Cl}n5nH2O, {Cu2(μ3-imzO2)2Cl2(H2O)2}n, {Cu3(μ-imzO2)6(H2O)3}n6nH2O, {Cu(imzO2)Br}n, {Cu2(µ4-imzO2)(µ-imzO2)2(H2O)2}n(NO3)n3nH2O, {Cu3(µ3-imzO2)4(OAc)2}n, [Cu(H2O)6]n{Cu4(µ3-imzO2)4(µ -imzO2)2(H2O)2(OTf)2}n(OTf)2n4nH2O, {Cu2(imzO2)3(H2O)2}n(ClO4)n2nH2O, {Cu(imzO2)2(H2O)}n2nH2O, and [Cu(H2O)6]n{Cu2(SO4)2(imzO2)2}n. The synthetic method was optimized for the complexes, so pure samples with good yields could be obtained. Solubility, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and magnetic studies were used to characterize the resulting complexes. All products are one-, two-, or three-dimensional polymeric inorganic networks. Two-dimensional networks occurred most commonly. 2,2'-Bipyridine N,N'-dioxide was employed as a chelating ligand to restrict dimensional growth of complexes. Progress towards synthesis of mixed ligand complexes will be discussed. Preliminary screening of magnetic properties of some of the prepared polymeric complexes showed large antiferromagnetic interaction operating between Cu(II) centers leading to diamagnetism from 2 K up to room temperature. Syntheses of 3-hydroxyimidazole 1-oxide with chloride of cerium, gadolinium, holmium, dysprosium, and terbium will be also discussed.
